Position and Time

It is interesting to me that although one could move a significant distance, one's displacement could be zero. It got me thinking that in terms of measuring goals, one could end up where they started, but it really is the journey that matters, and that person is never really where they began, because the path they took was a more significant measurement. I always like to relate my lessons back to my own life or the lives of others, because that's how it makes sense to me. This week I learned that a pt graph is a graph that literally measures p - position and t - time. In physics, unlike math, the position along the vertical axis we call x, and the horizontal axis is t or time, not to be confused with the former which is a horizontal position, lol. We generally measure time in seconds and position or distance in meters. Displacement is a net change in position, and unlike distance(which can only be positive), can be positive or negative as it's sign gives us the direction.

In which direction?

Scalars and vectors are concepts we use all the time even if we never realized it. When we reference speed, temperature, time, any variable of magnitude we have used a scalar, and when we add direction to that magnitude we have unknowingly used a vector. The idea of adding two vectors is entirely new to me, and I haven't found precise or easily understood examples of how to do this, but I'm interested in the idea of adding magnitude and direction to magnitude and direction, although I do not fully understand it. Khanacademy.com is a website I go to for all of my learning needs. The videos usually make learning clear and enjoyable. I actually just used it this past week to orient some new hires in the conduction system and blood flow of the heart. I have also used the handouts which my professor supplied us with, as well as various other google searches that turned up blogs, academic articles, and other videos. I am overjoyed that my professor recognizes that there are various l...
